12:11 pm - michael and i are engaged!!!!
yep that's right! he got down on one knee at the restaurant (411 West) when we were on a date on thursday night. so yay! here is my pretty ring!

we decided to go with moissanite, which is made in a factory outside of chapel thrill. it has similar properties to diamond and nobody had to be enslaved or die for me to get it (barring any and all unfortunate factory accidents of which i have no knowledge).

i apologize if you didn't get to find out in person. i so wanted to tell everyone face-to-face but that's just not possible. but YAY! I'M A FIANCEE! MICHAEL'S MY FIANCE!! HOORAY!

4:47 am - flying flapjacks, batman, she's actually updating!
and it's all because i was wasting time reading people's away messages and found this:
Welcome to the University of North Carolina, where your best hasn't been good enough since 1798.
it made me laugh.

ok let's see here: my physics professor is CRAZY. click here to read a long-ass letter i wrote to the chair of the department about him. i really really am liking my microbiology class. my professor is interesting and funny. the class really ties together everything i've learned in my other bio classes, organic, the fly lab, etc. i dropped the first spanish class i had because my teacher's spanish was AWFUL and the one i picked up is decent. interesting and not a huge amount of work. my honors colloquium: america and the world has only had 2 meetings and so it's not bad. my reproductive health class online is really interesting and not a lot of work either.

being an ra is good. i miss seeing randi every day, but i like having the room to myself. i enjoy my job for the most part, and i really like my room. it is big and pretty: yay woo! )

i've been busy and so between classes and RAness, i don't really get to hang out with anyone other than my dinner buddies (shun, bert, becca and michael all didn't buy meal plans either, so we rotate who cooks for everybody. i cook on tuesdays.), which makes me sad. i see mia in class a lot and on the weekends sometimes too, but i rarely see griffin (lunch sometimes or to see a moo-vie), and i've only seen randi two or three times. i've eaten lunch with geoffrey a few times too, i guess.

i'm going home this weekend, which i'm looking forward to - we find out tomorrow if we are going to be allowed to raze our cabin at lake tillery and build a big new house so we can have awesome awesome parties.

also (don't make fun of me) michael helped me practice riding a bike today, and shun videotaped. i sort-of knew how but not really because i never rode much when i was little because my parents were scared i would get hit by a car. (we live on a kind of busy street where people drive like 50 mph in a 25 and i'm already pretty clumsy/oblivious...)

ok i'm tired.

ok ok so i know it's been for-e-ver, but here's what's [been] happening with me:

mexico was awesome and i am sad that it will be awhile before i go back. i miss the city and the people and the food.

then i went to camp for two weeks which was good but hard and sad at the same time because i felt so jaded the whole time. so much has changed including a giant ingles with gas station right as you turn on our road (it used to be a field with horses). i went to bele chere and got a haircut for charity (nothing drastic) and won two sharpies which made me happy.

then i went with my family on vacation which was less stressful than i expected and it was wonderful to see my grandparents who i hadn't seen in a long time since they moved to florida.

i guess i should mention that i never have more than 24 hours at home between these little ventures, and in fact we left for florida 3 hours after i got home from camp.

then 12 hours ish after i got home from FL, i was packed and on my way to chapel thrill for ra training. it was interesting most of the time and fun sometimes and i really like our staff in the hinton james community (hjc) and especially in hjn (hj north) where i live. and my room is fabulous and huge and i have my own bathroom and it is all so pretty and you should come see it. i will post pictures soon when i am not on my way to physics yay woo.

yeah i really need to go, but i will talk about how ra training and classes went/are going very soon.

4:00 pm - i got tagged...
From Lissa:
List 3 things that bug you - things that others may find trivial. If you have an idea on how to fix it, be sure to put that down too. Then tag 6 of your friends. Only list three things because you may/can be tagged again.

1. People talking just to talk. It is not necessary to fill up silence with empty words. Likewise, it is not necessary to prolong a meeting by telling a personal story that is somehow remotely related in your mind. Save those for your own time. I want to get done and go home.

2. When buses/trains/planes/mass transportation systems run late.

3. The way commercials are always three times louder than the show/music/etc.

i forgot to tag people! Griffin Mia Erin Becca Jasmine Cricket

michael surprised me and took me to the beach for our anniversary this past weekend!! it was awesome and i will post pictures soon.

-------and now for the news: ----------

As you may have already heard, 14 Democrats and Republicans in the Senate have struck a deal that puts the so-called "nuclear option" off the table, at least for now. The deal allows filibusters to be used against judicial nominees in "extraordinary circumstances." Unfortunately, the deal also allows a simple majority vote on three of the most anti-women's and civil rights judicial nominees to the federal Circuit Courts of Appeals: Janice Rogers Brown, Priscilla Owen, and William Pryor.

Will saving women's lives, women's rights, and civil rights be considered such an extraordinary circumstance? If the records of the three anti-women's rights, anti-civil rights nominees who will not be filibustered under the deal are to be the standard, then these rights are in grave peril.

But at least we have a chance. Without any possibility of a filibuster, we would have a very slim chance under the present circumstances of blocking an extreme anti-women's rights and civil rights Supreme Court nominee.

We must remain tough and vigilant. Please send a message to your Senators today urging them to vote against Rogers Brown, Owen, and Pryor.

The first vote is scheduled for tomorrow on Priscilla Owen's nomination. Votes on Janice Rogers Brown and William Pryor are expected in the next two weeks.

Owen, a Texas Supreme Court justice, has voted against a woman's right to choose in every abortion-related opinion. Her dissenting opinion in a case involving a minor who wished to obtain a judicial bypass for an abortion was called "an unconscionable act of judicial activism" by none other than President Bush's Attorney General, Alberto Gonzales. Owen is a Big Business nominee who consistently rules against consumers and tried to weaken discrimination protections in employment.

Rogers Brown, a justice on California's Supreme Court, has denounced the New Deal as the "triumph of our own socialist revolution." That puts in jeopardy Social Security, Fair Labor Standards, the minimum wage, and the list goes on. She has received a partial "not qualified" rating from the American Bar Association. In her public speeches, she has criticized the legal theory that underlies the right to privacy, abortion, and access to birth control, and she voted to protect racist speech in the workplace under the First Amendment.

Pryor has called Roe v. Wade "the worst abomination of constitutional law in our history." He has repeatedly argued in favor of a state's right to be exempt from federal laws banning discrimination. Commenting on the Supreme Court's decision to overturn laws banning consensual sodomy, Pryor said, "... a constitutional right that protects 'the choice of one's partner' . . . must logically extend to activities like prostitution, adultery, necrophilia, bestiality, possession of child pornography, and even incest and pedophilia (if the child should credibly claim to be 'willing')."

Please, take action today – urge your Senators to vote against these extreme right-wing judicial nominees.

READY GO!

10:14 am - "Females prefer males with a bigger nuptial gift"
everybody wave goodbye to the ennui that was my ecology and population genetics class. it is done. what my grade looks like, i'm not so sure, since i turned in a ROUGH ROUGH draft as the final paper (intentionally - the ennui thing again) and got a 70. eh. it's done.

i also found out last night that i can make approximately a 53 on the organic final tomorrow and still get a b-. i won't be stressed now, but how much will i be able to make myself study???

oh well. i will now relax in my bio-free existence for an hour or so before beginning a long day/night of chem (or at least that is the goal).

β€œFor a long time it seemed to me that life was about to begin – real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life. This perspective has helped me to see there is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way. So treasure every moment you have and remember that time waits for no one. Happiness is a journey, not a destination.” -Alfred D. Souza

10:16 pm - The Rape of Mr. Smith (by an anonymous writer)
The law discriminates against rape victims in a manner which would not be tolerated by victims of any other crime. In the following example, a holdup victim is asked questions similar in form to those usually asked a victim of rape.

"Mr. Smith, you were held up at gunpoint on the corner of 16th and Locust?"

"Yes."

"Did you struggle with the robber?"

"No."

"Why not?"

"He was armed."

"Then you made a conscious decision to comply with his demands rather than to resist?"

"Yes."

"Did you scream? Cry out?"

"No. I was afraid."

"I see. Have you ever been held up before?"

"No."

"Have you ever given money away?"

"Yes, of course--"

"And did you do so willingly?"

"What are you getting at?"

"Well, let's put it like this, Mr. Smith. You've given away money in the past--in fact, you have quite a reputation for philanthropy. How can we be sure that you weren't contriving to have your money taken from you by force?"

"Listen, if I wanted--"

"Never mind. What time did this holdup take place, Mr. Smith?"

"About 11 p.m."

"You were out on the streets at 11 p.m.? Doing what?"

"Just walking."

"Just walking? You know it's dangerous being out on the street that late at night. Weren't you aware that you could have been held up?"

"I hadn't thought about it."

"What were you wearing at the time, Mr. Smith?"

"Let's see. A suit. Yes, a suit."

"An expensive suit?"

"Well--yes."

"In other words, Mr. Smith, you were walking around the streets late at night in a suit that practically advertised the fact that you might be a good target for some easy money, isn't that so? I mean, if we didn't know better, Mr. Smith, we might even think you were asking for this to happen, mightn't we?"

"Look, can't we talk about the past history of the guy who did this to me?"

"I'm afraid not, Mr. Smith. I don't think you would want to violate his rights, now, would you?"

10:16 am - i had a baby!
i did my first solo birth (without a mentor) as a doula on thursday! i was on call for this family and they called me early in the morning (3:42 am) to say they were on the way to the hospital, and could i come over in an hour or two? i arrived a little after 5 am, the baby was born by 3, and i left a little after 4 pm. it was a long day, but AWESOME and exhilarating!

i may be having another today, but it depends on whether any babies want to be born today.

HOOray!

7:17 pm - i wrote a long entry a few days ago, but it got erased, so instead you get this
in researching for an english paper i'm gonna write, i discovered that i have many traits in common with a borderline personality style. [personality styles are changable; disorders are pervasive and affect one's ability to function "normally"] i discovered that many of you easily fall in to one of the following categories.

which one are you? )
